Goal

Prepare for the air brake knowledge test by understanding every answer, in English and in French

The challenge.

The air brake endorsement is added to a driver's licence and tested in a similar way from one province to the next, A question bank that only marks an answer right or wrong never explains why it is right, and on a safety-critical system that gap matters: memorizing the low-pressure warning threshold is not the same as understanding what the spring brake does when the air runs out. We also had to build the app around a boundary rather than hide it. This is an independent study aid, it is not the official exam, it is not affiliated with or endorsed by any provincial or territorial licensing authority, and it is no substitute for hands-on training with a certified instructor. The design problem was to make a study tool credible and genuinely useful to the person sitting the test, in both English and French, while stating plainly what it is not.

THE SOLUTION

Understanding over memorization.

We built the app around two study paths and a single rule: no answer without an explanation. Everything runs on the device, in either language, with no account to create.

  • Two ways to study Study mode moves topic by topic through the six areas of the endorsement and tracks progress through the question bank; mock exam runs a full timed test end to end.
  • An explanation for every answer Every question carries a WHY panel giving the reasoning behind the correct option, so a fail-safe principle is learned rather than memorized.
  • Timed mock exams A countdown, a question counter and a progress bar reproduce the pressure of a real knowledge test, and the result is scored against the pass mark.
  • Bilingual, offline, private The interface and the question bank switch between English and French in one tap, the app works with no connection, and there is no account, no advertising and no tracking.

The result.

Air Brake Test Practice reached the App Store on 4 June 2026 as a one-time purchase at $3.99, everything included: the full question bank and unlimited mock exams, with no subscription and no in-app purchases. It runs on iPhone and iPad, in English and in French, entirely offline. The project shows how we approach a professional study tool: the content model, the bilingual layer and the honesty about what an independent study aid can and cannot claim are all one product decision.
